Standard vs. Custom Rubber Diaphragms:
When High-Performance Engineered Solutions Matter
Custom-engineered diaphragms become necessary when your application involves unusual geometry, aggressive chemicals, extreme temperatures, tight tolerances, high cycle counts, or regulatory documentation.
Working on an application that calls for more than a standard diaphragm? Every custom diaphragm from The Rubber Group starts with a thorough review of your unique application needs and collaboration with your team regarding the challenges that need to be solved. From there, we can recommend the right compound, reinforcement, geometry, and manufacturing process.
The Rubber Group team is ready to engineer the right diaphragm for your application. Let’s start a conversation about your diaphragm specs and needs:
Custom Diaphragm Types We Manufacture
Convoluted Diaphragms (Deep Draw, Top Hat) – For higher-stroke pump, valve, and pressure-control applications.
Fabric-Reinforced Diaphragms – For higher burst strength, dimensional stability, and demanding pressure cycles.
Flat Diaphragms – For low-stroke, high-precision sensing and pressure response applications.
Piston-Style Diaphragms – For pressure regulators, boosters, and assemblies that require rigid support.
Rolling Diaphragms (Drop Center, Pie Pan) – For long linear travel with low friction in actuators, cylinders, and control systems.
What is an Industrial Rubber Diaphragm?
An industrial diaphragm is a flexible elastomeric membrane that separates two media – such as a fluid and air, or two distinct fluids – and converts pressure changes into mechanical movement, or mechanical movement into pressure control. Made of a flexible rubber or rubber-fiber blend, a diaphragm functions as both a seal and an actuating element.
Used in pumps, valves, pressure regulators, sensors, and actuators, the diaphragm must flex repeatedly without leaking, cracking, swelling, or losing shape. The diaphragm's elastomer compound, durometer, and geometry determine its chemical resistance, temperature tolerance, and fatigue life under repeated cycling.

Diaphragm Materials
Premium Elastomer Compounds
Matched to Your Media, Temperature, and Cycle Life
The right elastomer is the foundation of diaphragm performance. We select or formulate compounds based on the media the diaphragm contacts, the operating temperature, required flexibility, compression set, pressure cycling, and expected service life.
EPDM - For excellent resistance to water, steam, weathering, and many chemical environments. Common in water management, sanitary, and food processing applications
Nitrile (NBR) - For outstanding resistance to oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids. Common in pneumatic actuators and hydrocarbon-exposed systems
Neoprene - Balanced resistance to moderate chemicals, oils, and weathering for general industrial applications
FKM (Viton®) - Exceptional chemical resistance and high temperature performance up to 500°F for aggressive chemicals and elevated temperatures
Silicone - For wide temperature ranges (-120°F to +450°F) flexibility, and biocompatibility in medical and food applications
HNBR - Enhanced heat, oil, and chemical resistance for demanding applications in elevated temperatures
Butyl - Superior gas impermeability for vacuum applications and excellent resistance to ketones and alcohols
FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer) - Ultimate chemical resistance for the most aggressive media where other elastomers fail
And MORE!
Fabric-Reinforced Diaphragm Options
for Higher Pressure and Dimensional Stability
When rubber alone cannot meet the pressure, cycle-life, or dimensional requirements of the application, fabric reinforcement adds strength and stability. We bond textile reinforcement into the rubber construction to improve burst resistance, control stretch, and support long-term flex performance.
Polyester - Helps control stretch and maintain dimensional stability under pressure. Often used when the diaphragm needs consistent shape and repeatable movement
Nylon - Provides strength and flex-fatigue resistance for applications with repeated cycling or dynamic movement
Aramid (Kevlar®) - Adds high tensile strength with low weight. Used in applications with elevated pressure or demanding mechanical loads
Aramid (Nomex®, Conex®) – Supports applications exposed to higher temperatures while maintaining flexibility during repeated movement
Fiberglass - Helps maintain dimensional stability in high-temperature environments where thermal resistance is a primary requirement
Cotton - Bonds well with rubber and offers flexibility for specialized diaphragm constructions where traditional textile reinforcement is preferred
Hybrid Fabrics - Custom-engineered reinforcement combinations for optimized performance
Multi-Ply Constructions - Layered fabric configurations for extreme pressure and exceptional service life
Specialized Weaves - Application-specific fabric patterns for balanced strength and flexibility

Frequently Asked Questions
The most common causes of industrial diaphragm failure or leaks are chemical degradation (wrong compound for the media), fatigue cracking (under-reinforced construction or stress-concentrating geometry), extrusion (inadequate bead or mounting design), thermal hardening or softening (operating outside the compound's temperature range), wicking (fluid migrating through the fabric layer via capillary action, particularly at cut edges under pressure), and – in fabric-reinforced diaphragm designs – delamination between the rubber and textile layers when bonding is inadequate or the reinforcement restricts flex beyond design limits. Diaphragm failure prevention starts with a thorough application review before engineering begins and compound and construction are selected. The Rubber Group team can help you with custom diaphragm designs, diaphragm prototyping, as well as diaphragm bench testing in the development of solutions that help maximize durability and service life.
